Gary and I grew up with John from elementary school through high school in Salt Lake City. We played a lot of sports together, especially baseball on the grounds of the old Liberty Elementary School and basketball in the Harvard Ward gym. Later John starred in football and was co-captain of the 1961-62 South High team. While a fierce competitor in sports, John was never aggressive or demanding in his personal relationships. We admired his equability, level headedness, and dependability. My only regret in knowing John was that our paths took different directions when we finished school and never crossed again as adults. Nonetheless, it was friends like John who formed an invaluable network of associations growing up that gave us all a solid sense of worth and community strength. I remember our youthful friendship with great fondness and appreciation.
