Dear Doug,

We became belated friends during our senior year at South. You played defensive end for the football team and I was the Scribe’s sports editor. We had a mutual friend in Mike Mitchell, who also played end and co-captained the team. The summer after graduation, the three of us, along with Dale Stagg and Richard Abelhouzen, worked briefly for a private garbage pick-up service in downtown Salt Lake. I will never forget the time I tossed a big garbage can over the side of the truck without looking and, regretfully, hit you in the head with it. You yelled in pain and said what the blankety-blank-blank! I thought I was a goner. But when you saw who the culprit was, you laughed and forgave me, saying a little bump on the head would just make you a better man. I never saw you after that. I heard you joined the marines and ended up surviving the war in Vietnam. I hated that, but if I ever had to share a foxhole in combat it would be with someone like you. And then after the war you went on to pursue a career with the California State Highway Patrol? Good. You’re the kind of tough but humane and decent kind of law enforcement officer our country still needs. Rest in peace, missed and belated friend.
