Joe Steeley

Drowned in East Canyon Reservoir.  Right after graduating from South High, Joe and I were attending the Salt Lake School of Electronics when we had a field day at the park. Two other classmates Tom Kirtley and Palsy Powell joined us for mountain climbing in a jeep up Immigration Canyon. We got hot and dusty and found ourselves swimming in the reservoir to cool off. It didn't look like Joe was much of a swimmer so I jumped in to help him get to some floating barrels down by the dam. It was so weird! While we rested on the barrels I told Joe to take it easy and we'd start back in a few minutes. He looked me straight in the eyes and said, "I'm not going to make it back." The mood was very somber. I tried to lighten it up by joking. I swam around for a bit and went back to the shore. When Joe started back he was thrashing in the water. The others tried to help him but he fought them off while I ran to get a log to toss in to them. It was so tragic when he slipped beneath the surface and out of sight. I flagged down a car that was going by. As luck would have it...They were scuba divers. They rushed down to the water and tied a rope on to one of the divers. He searched around and after, what seamed like a lifetime, brought Joes' lifeless body to the shore. We worked on him for a time but soon realized he was gone. We were in shock! It was a miracle that his body had lodged over a submerged railing that ran across the top of the old dam or we probably never would have recovered his body. Rest in Peace my dear friend.  submitted by Dale Butterfield
