Paul F Luckau (Teacher)

Paul Fredrick Luckau 1927 - 2006 Paul Fredrick Luckau passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, Provo, UT, of congestive heart failure. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, February 9, 1927, to Paul Herman Emil Luckau and Ethel Geniel Sorenson Luckau. His sister was Yvonne Geniel Luckau Jackson. All three have preceded him in death. He is survived by his family. Paul married Hilde Langhorst in the Salt Lake LDS Temple by Joseph Fielding Smith, September 1, 1948, and they've been married for over 57 years. Paul and Hilde's children include: Karen Louise Luckau, Janice Marie (David) Potter, Richard Paul (Carolyn) Luckau, and Lana Renee Luckau Rooke. All of which are very grateful for being raised by their parents' great example and love. He liked hiking with his grandchildren. They include: Chelsea Marie, Kenner David and Wesley Paul Potter; Angela Marie Luckau (Ryan) Hill; Richard Brian (Shaleena) Luckau; Brandon Paul Luckau; Rachel Ellen Luckau (Seth) Watson; Emily Beth Luckau (William) Empey; Lindsey Jo Luckau; Aubrey Anne Luckau; and Magan Helene Rooke. Their great-grandchildren are Trey David Potter; Katelynn Marie Luckau and Daniel Paul Luckau; and Taya Watson. Paul had a distinguished career as a teacher of English and German. He taught at Lincoln Junior High School and South High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, and then for nearly 30 years at Brigham Young University. The Goethe Institutes in the United States together with The American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) bestowed a Certificate of Merit upon Paul Luckau for outstanding achievements in furthering and encouraging the study of German language and culture in the United States of America, August 2, 1986. Paul served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War as interrogator, translator, and Military Intelligence and served in Germany for part of that time. Previous to his active military involvement, Paul had completed the R.O.T.C. (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) program at West High School June 8, 1944, at the age of 17. Paul was dedicated to the Lord through church service all his life in ward and stake leadership callings including: Bishop in the Lake Ridge 2nd Ward, Magna, Utah, from 1958 to 1963, and in Provo he served as Deacon Quorum Advisor, High Council member, and High Priest group leaders; Sunday School positions, home teacher and many others. He was grateful to serve the last few years in the Provo LDS Temple. He loved to run, walk, bicycle and stay in shape. He jogged a lot and lifted weights and even ran some marathons. He considered himself a life-long learner. He loved to read and study and provide incites to his family, and stand in front of a mirror! He had good taste. We will miss him greatly. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 16, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at the Provost Chapel, 715 S. Utah Ave. (1060 East), Provo, Utah. Friends may call Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 E. Center Street, as well as at the church Monday afternoon from 12:30-1:45 p.m. Interment, Provo City Cemetery.
